Whether you believe it or not, there are patterns in the stars. Astrology is the name given to these patterns and has a rich history spanning thousands of years. Intertwined with various cultures and civilisations, the earliest records begin in Mesopotamia and spread from Egypt to classical Greece and Rome, then onwards to the renaissance and current pop culture.
The patterns among these celestial bodies of magnificent magnitude have understandable influence over our little planet and bodies down on Earth. Although you may be familiar with your sun sign (also known as your star sign), this sign is at the surface of your astrological chart. Your chart is much more nuanced. And each aspect shows up in your life in various ways.
The three most prominent signs in your chart are your sun, moon and rising. Some people relate more to their moon sign because it’s the sign that relates to our relationship with ourselves and those around us. In comparison, your sun sign is your core personality. Our rising sign (also known as our ascendant) is how others initially perceive us, being almost a mask that we present to the world.
Your chart reading depends on which sign shows up in which planet. The twelve zodiac signs are split up into four elements:
- Fire – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
- Traits: Energetic, enthusiastic and passionate.
- Earth – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
- Traits: Practical, grounded and dependable.
- Air – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
- Traits: Intellectual, communicative and social.
- Water – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
- Traits: Emotional, intuitive and empathetic.
Depending on which sign you have in which planet influences different areas of your life. For example, if your venus is in cancer you may find that you value deep emotional connection and sensitivity in your relationships. The planets’ influence are as follows:
- Venus – love
- Mercury – communication
- Mars – drive
- Jupiter – growth
- Saturn – structure
- Uranus – change
- Neptune – intuition
- Pluto – transformation
There are many other influences on your chart, such as what house each sign is in and the angles between the planets (known as aspects) which influence how each interact. In addition, your midheaven (MC) concerns your career and your north node nudges you toward the direction you’re supposed to be moving toward in this life.
An astrologer can help you to interpret your chart and how each element creates a unique picture of your strengths, challenges and life patterns. Or you can download apps like Costar or The Pattern which give you a free chart analysis with great insight. You can also add friends on these apps and receive daily updates. These apps have definitely helped to make astrology less “woo woo” and more mainstream. So there’s no excuse for you to download the app and check it out for yourself!
Over the years of meeting people and getting to know their signs, I’ve picked up a lot of patterns (to the point that I can often accurately guess)! It’s interesting to note that certain signs seem to orbit around you and others don’t seem to stick around. Once you’ve looked into it, then you can get back to me and tell me if you’re a non-believer. At the end of the day, astrology is an interesting lens to understand yourself and the world around you. It’s a wonderful thing to remain open and receptive to different ways of perceiving your inner and outer worlds. Please feel free to reach out and let me know how you go with your exploration of the stars!
