Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. For all the single ladies, it’s a great excuse to get your gals together and celebrate a sweet galentine’s evening. A classic rom com is, in my opinion, an absolute necessity. We all have our swoon-worthy favourites. But I’ve compiled a list of my top 10 to help you and your gals choose the best chick flick for your evening.

If you’re feeling cute, I highly recommend setting up a home projector with a sheet and fairy lights. Assemble some mattresses, comfy cushions and yummy snacks. You might even like to get a romantic cocktail happening. Cosmos anyone?

  1. 10 Things I Hate About You

Probably my favourite movie of all time is the modern-day take on Shakespeare’s classic, “The Taming of the Shrew.” It tells the story of a high school boy who isn’t allowed to date the girl he wants until her anti-social older sister (Julia Stiles) has a boyfriend. So the boy pays a mysterious new boy to their school (Heath Ledger) to charm Kat. It packs teenage angst and swoon-worthy romance.

2. Dirty Dancing

Get your dancing feet ready as you witness dreamboat Patrick Swayze and Baby (Jennifer Grey) – two lovers from opposite sides of the track – fall in love over summer camp. Prepare yourself for all the dancing and that legendary lift!

3. Mamma Mia

With the soundtrack of ABBA as the soundtrack, this musical will have you singing along as the wedding bells ring in Greece. Amanda Seyfried plays Sophie, a girl who is trying to identify her Dad from three prospects in time to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. She invites them all to Greece, with her Mum (Meryl Streep) caught up in the journey.

4. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Magazine writer, Andy Andersen is assigned a mission to find a date then drive him away for an article she must write. Little does she know, the man she chooses has a bet going with his boss that he can make any woman fall in love with him. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are the leading actors, need I say more?

5. The Notebook

Oh-so romantic but utterly heartbreaking, get the tissues ready for this classic love story based on the best-selling novel by Nicholas Sparks.

6. Pretty Woman

Watch the romance develop between a prostitute (played by Julia Roberts) and wealthy business man (Richard Gere). This is the old story of two lovers from opposite sides of the tracks and their undeniable chemistry. The takeaway: love always triumps!

7. 13 Going 30

Jennifer Garner plays 13-year-old turned 30-year-old overnight after a magical birthday wish. Waking up as a successful fashion editor ends up teaching her a lot of important lessons in a hilarious way. Did I mention Mark Ruffalo is the leading man?

8. Sex and the City: the movie

This list wouldn’t be complete without this rite of passage movie sprung from its successful series. Follow Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and her three best friends as they navigate love, career and friendship against the fashionable backdrop of New York City.

9. Valentine’s Day

Of course this movie had to feature! It tells the stories of multiple characters on February 14th. And the cast is killer: Jennifer Garner, Julia Roberts, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Jamie Foxx and Anne Hathaway to name a few…

10. Before Sunrise

A film I only just discovered, it’s the first of a three-part series whereby a man and woman meet on a train in Europe. Their conversation turns into a spontaneous decision to step off the train together in Vienna and spend one romantic night together before the man must fly home in the morning. Make it a movie marathon by lining up the next two films in the series, Before Sunset and Before Midnight.

Did your favourite rom com make the list? I’d love to know what it is!

Love Clo
