Nowhere quite seems to have the elegance, class and charm of France. You may know Paris by heart, but have you heard of the jewel of the Basque country?
Biarritz is a beautiful mix of elegant Parisian architecture and dining with surf-cool culture. Picture surfing waves with a view of a rapunzel tower to your right at popular Cote des Basques (that just about sums up Biarritz)! If you’re not a surfer, you can learn to be with plenty of places that offer lessons and board hire. Regardless of how humbling it can be to learn this new way of movement, it offers an incredible opportunity to connect with the energy of the sea in a whole new, intuitive way. Did I mention the euphoria you feel gliding down those rippling waves?
If you don’t feel like surfing, you can watch the action from many of the trendy cafes and restaurants that overlook the water at Cote des Basques. Or there are plenty of beautiful beaches more suited to swim and sunbathe. My favourite was La Grande Plage with its colourful striped umbrellas and view on either side of a colourful casino and lighthouse.
Begin your days by riding a bike or Vespa to your morning coffee or brunch spot. Some of my favourite spots were Cafe Ekia, Bali Bowls and Milwaukee Cafe. You also can’t miss Les Market Halles for daily gourmet goods and local market treasures.
While in town, be sure to explore Biarritz’ trendy boutiques. Jet Records has an amazing vinyl collection. And for the cutest local bookstore with a unique interior, definitely check out Bookstore Biarritz. Surfers must check out Colors of Surfing for cool boards, fashion, accessories and eats.
When you’re ready to watch the sunset, head to Extola Bibi with all the locals for an incredible view over Cote des Basques and a glass of divine natural wine. The vibes here are unmatched. If you’re up for a lively night, continue on with dinner and a dance at Le Bar Jean.
When you’ve had your fix of Biarritz, check out Guethary or Anglet for the day (both worthwhile spots)!
I hope you love this place just as much as I did.
