Artist Adrianna Dimitrakakis has burst onto the scene with her sunny portrayal of life’s simple pleasures and the delight of discovery that comes with travel. Her work is characteristically colourful and nostalgically vintage. Painted like postcards from summery destinations, her art will whisk you away to faraway lands… with a cocktail in hand.

Before beginning her work as a full-time artist, Dimitrakakis worked in marketing for a surf brand which gave her the opportunity to travel to many places around the world for photoshoots and surf trips. She began to document her travels and illustrate detailed maps of destinations. Commissions came into her work too as she created illustrations from other peoples’ storied and travels. Over time the intricacy of her art became looser and bolder. Under the alias of Atlas, her personal art brand began to grow a devoted following. A fork in the road inevitably arrived in which she chose to pursue her art business full-time. And we’re so glad she did!

The inspiration behind her work is of course her travels, from Mexico to Greece. When exploring, Dimitrakakis captures the beauty of her surroundings through a series of photographs, sketches and souvenirs. Sometimes signages, food labels, films and old books of places she desires to visit is enough to inspire her next collection. Once she has enough inspiration and material, she dreams up the collection as a whole with a colour palette in mind. This can look like drafting up her ideas on her iPad. From there she puts paint to canvas. This starts out as a few layers of texture, followed by drawings of the key motifs and vintage text. Then it’s time for that characteristic colour in shades of wanderlust! Dimitrakakis has created many artworks on canvas, but her art has also been transferred to the world of fashion through sarongs and swimwear.

Dimitrakakis currently resides in sub-tropical Byron Bay. Time in the sun and in the ocean is integral to her creative process. This transfers to the way her paintings evoke feelings of carefree happiness. For more summer lovin’ vibes, I invite you to explore more of her work here.
